Background of the Study
Maternal health remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Zamfara State. The maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is one of the highest globally, with rural communities disproportionately affected due to limited access to quality healthcare services. Contributing factors include inadequate healthcare infrastructure, shortages of trained personnel, and cultural barriers to accessing maternal health services. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches that transcend traditional healthcare systems.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers a transformative potential to improve healthcare delivery, including maternal health services. AI-driven tools can enhance early detection of pregnancy complications, streamline patient management, and ensure timely interventions. For instance, AI-powered applications can analyze patient data to predict high-risk pregnancies, assist midwives with decision-making, and optimize resource allocation in underfunded primary health centers. Mobile health platforms integrated with AI can further bridge the gap by offering remote consultations and health education to women in isolated areas.
Globally, AI applications in maternal health have demonstrated remarkable results. In India, for example, AI-powered systems have enabled healthcare workers to identify and manage high-risk pregnancies effectively, reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. Similarly, in Sub-Saharan Africa, AI-assisted ultrasound devices have made significant strides in providing low-cost diagnostic services to pregnant women. However, despite these advancements, the adoption of AI in maternal health in Nigeria, particularly in rural regions, remains limited due to infrastructural, financial, and policy barriers.
This study seeks to explore the potential of AI to address maternal health challenges in Zamfara State by examining its implementation in primary health centers. By understanding the role AI can play in improving maternal health outcomes, this research contributes to the ongoing efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3, which emphasizes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.
Statement of the Problem
Maternal mortality and morbidity continue to plague rural communities in Zamfara State, largely due to inadequate healthcare delivery systems. Traditional approaches have failed to address issues such as delays in diagnosing complications, lack of skilled health workers, and poor access to critical health information. The integration of AI technology presents a promising solution to these challenges, but its adoption in rural primary health centers is underexplored. There is limited empirical evidence on how AI applications could enhance maternal health services in these settings. This study investigates the role of AI in improving maternal health services in Zamfara State to provide actionable insights for healthcare policymakers and practitioners.
